Most sizes have Black Oxide finish; please refer to the product number suffix. BO = Black Oxide; PL = Plain. Not all Black Oxide finishes are equal in appearance. The Black Oxide of yesteryear is dull, flat, and may be a bit rusty now. The Black Oxide of yesteryear may also more accurately be a Black Phosphate finish. New Black Oxide, as on most of our Oval Head Wood Screws, is shiny and looks more like a coating than a wash. Some were black oxided and waxed, others black oxided and oiled, and some were just black oxided, or black phosphated, and left dry. In these carriage bolts, you will find the full gamut of appearances in the black oxides.
We now have three sizes with Statuary Bronze plating, denoted with a BZP suffix. See the Nuts and Washers page for Bronze Plated nuts and flat washers to match.
Whereas Black Oxide is a patination, and is not weatherproof or rustproof, plating is weatherproof and will not rust. Statuary Bronze plating gives a rich brown color to accent your project.
Some applications call for a bolt with less than full threads; to assist you in making choices, we have included a column listing the Thread Length (T.L.). F.T. denotes Full Threads.
A few items have an asterisk after the size, for an explanatory note; please scroll down to the bottom of the table for the explanation.

*B denotes Button Head; smaller diameter, but higher than the standard carriage bolt head. A round head with no drive. Has the square shank. Pictured in the image at the top of this page, upper left.
*O denotes the product is very oily, as if it has been in oil for long time, and is gummy as a result. Should clean up with solvent.
*R denotes a Rib Neck carriage bolt, rather than the normal square shank. Early carriage builders favored this type. Right of center in image above.
*S denotes a Short Neck carriage bolt, intended to be secured by placing through metal having a square hole. Too short a square shank to engage in wood, but just right for a wheelwright's bolted hubs. There are three examples in the image above, two as Black Oxide, and one Plain finish.
*LN denotes Long Neck. Not pictured. A regular square neck is approximately as long as the diameter. A Long Neck is approximately one and one-half times the diameter of the bolt.
*PH denotes a Black Phosphate finish, rather than a black oxide. Likely to be slightly rusty.
